Letter to the Barony; Murder Melee and Trillium War

Greetings unto the most noble populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

The first melee event of the year was a great success. Skraeling Althing fielded eight ferocious armoured combatants, and allied with Clan MacLachlan, went forth to fight valiantly. It was great to see such a large team that worked so well together. We were further fortunate that the unbelted commanders, Baron Rattanicus and Lord James Edgarson, managed to both get lots of command time in for various teams.

We would also like to especially thank Lady Yvette de Sancler for her assistance with the Baronial pavilion.

The Great Bacon Melee Challenge from Lord Yamamoto Morikazu of Clan Okami ended in a draw. Wassail to Milandra Longweigh for being our lone authorized fighter to qualify for the challenge. What does this mean?  It means we won no bacon – but also it means we lost no bacon.  We are in negotiation for a new challenge, which means the Baronial Bacon Fry-Up has been postponed as well.

It was wonderful to see many of you at Trillium War. The weather was terrific and there were many things see and do.  The weather could not have been more perfect. It was wonderful to see and hear about all of the ‘Teach and Learn’ activities Our populace was engaged in.  Keep up the great work!

We would like to thank all those Skraels who fought so well alongside our brothers and sisters of the east in the Baronial melee challenge. Due to the experience and tenacity of all of the combatants, we were victorious! Wassail Skraeling Althing! Vivat L’Ile du Dragon Dormant and Northern Outpost!

We would like to thank Dame Helen of Greyfells for doing such an amazing job of planning out and setting up the Skraeling Althing encampment. His Excellency truly understands how difficult of  a job this is.

This year, we were honoured to sit in Their Majesties Great Court, and well pleased to award a Hare Valiant to Mistress Kersteken Janzdochtere, and Bunny Tails to Milandra Longweigh and Otillie of Skraeling Althing.  during Great Court it was Our joy to witness more Skraels receive recognition from the hands of Their Royal Majesties. We wish to congratulate Lady Lucie Peltiere on receiving the Award of the Orion.

The true highlight of the event was witnessing Mistress Aelfwyn Langanwuda being placed on vigil for the Order of Chivalry.  This wonderful lady has always stood as an example of virtue and nobility, and we are so very proud that she has been offered this honour.

We look forward to seeing many of you at Summer Siege this August for the vigil of The Honourable Lady Alais de Poitiers, and then later this fall at Feast of the Bear for the vigil of Mistress Aelfwyn Langanwuda.

Letter to the Barony; Crown Tourney and Pikeman’s Pleasure

Greetings unto the most noble populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

Though We were not able to attend, many Skraels made the trek out to Fruits of Our Labour, to fulfill Our taxes of ‘teach and learn’.  We were informed much fun was had by all, sharing both knowledge and song with Our good neighbours.

This Spring We have had the pleasure of attending Crown Tournament in the Shire of Bastille du Lac. Crown is always a very exciting event, and this one was no different.  It was wonderful and inspiring to see so many Skraels participating in the tournament. By Our count, 10 of the 24 participants were from Skraeling Althing. What am amazing showing!  After many a hard fought bout, Graf Siegfried Brandbeorn was the victor.  Many congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses Siegfried and Xristina.  It’s been a long time since any of the Royal Family have been from Skrael, and I’m sure you all are as excited as We are to support one of Our own.

This past weekend, His Excellency travelled to the border lands of Petrea Thule, spending a lovely afternoon under the trees in Their Majesties Presence. It was a fun filled day with many tournaments, lots of good friends and some wonderful food. The evening’s feast was assembled by the ducklings, of which Alana the Quiet, Lydia, and Saraphina the Quick were all members. Alas, His Excellency could not stay for it, but he heard through many sources that it was a wonderful feast and they did an amazing job. Their Excellencies of Septentria awarded each of them the Award of the Bear’s Cub for their contribution to Septentria.

In court, Their Majesties awarded His Excellency the Award of the Orion for his brewing. Truly a wonderful honour, for which he was humbled. The true highlight of the event was that The Honourable Lady Alais de Poitiers was asked to stand Vigil to consider admission to the Order of the Laurel!! We hope she accepts this great honour, as We are constantly amazed and astounded by the quality of the work she does, and the humility with which she performs it with. Wassail!!

As you are all aware Murder Melee fast approaches.  His Excellency is looking forward to fielding a melee team this year.  As a reminder, any authorized fighter that wishes to fight in the Baronial melee team is welcome.  Please contact his Excellency if you would like to participate.  As a reminder, last year We accepted the Great Bacon Melee Challenge from Lord Yamamoto Morikazu of Clan Okami. What does this mean? It means the Barony will attempt to field as many new armoured combatants on the field at this coming Murder Melee, fully kitted out in their own armour and authorized. For every new fighter more that we can provide than they do, they will pay the Barony one pound of bacon, at a to be determined later date. And on that note, We cordially invite the Barony to a Baronial Bacon Fry-Up at this later date. Come enjoy the spoils of war! Of course, that’s assuming we can muster our new fighters at Melee. Otherwise the Baronial Bacon Fry-Up will be a very sad event, as there will be no bacon.

Letter to the Barony; Coronation

Greetings unto the most noble populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

The cold weather could not dampen Our spirits as we went forth to celebrate the Coronation of Their Majesties, Nigel and Adrielle, in the Incipient Canton of Northgeatham in the Barony of Ramshaven.  Waes hail to Their Majesties on Their ascension to the Thrones of Ealdormere.  We were thrilled to see Our wonderful Skraels made champions of Their Court: Mistress Aelfwyn Langanwuda as King’s Champion, and Lady Gwendolyn of Aldburg as the Queen’s Champion.  We had the pleasure to witness the prowess and honour these combatants displayed while fighting in the name of Their Majesties. We are truly proud of Our fighters to be given such an honour.

We look forward to joining many of you next weekend at Spring Crown in the Shire of Bastille du Lac.  Our neighbours always throw a great event, and We are certain this one will be no different.

Letter to the Barony; Break the Belt of Winter

Greetings unto the busy populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

Break the Belt of Winter brought us the first local tourney of the year. It was wonderful to see so many souls come out to Our Canton of Greyfells to welcome Her Majesty. The all-day potluck ensured we were all very well fed, and the variety of food-themed activities meant fun for all.

Outside there were two armoured combat tournaments, a beer tournament and a cookie tournament.  Congratulations to the winners, Sir Baldric Leeman of Newcastle Emlyn and The Honourable Lord Edward of Flaming Sky. Inside, the Ealdormere Academy of Defence hosted a cadet’s prize tournament, which Baron Shahid passed with flying colours.

Break the Back of Winter has always been known for it’s A&S activities, and this year was no different. We would like to thank The Honourable Lady Constance of Caldrithig, The Honourable Lady Eluned verch Angor, Lady Alienor la fileuse and Lady Sorcha Kilmongan for bringing forth such excellent works at our first Baronial A&S Championship. The winner and our new champion is The Honourable Lady Eluned verch Angor, inching ahead of The Honourable Lady Constance of Caldrithig by just two points (out of a maximum score of 400). Truly a photo-finish result! We also hosted another Dirty Dozen Donation Derby, this year won by Lady Kaðlín Konálsdottir. As is traditional, there was also a blind A&S tournament with some very interesting entries. Congratulations to Duchess Dagmar Halvdan for her winning entry. There were also three recipe competitions: a cheese and mushroom pie, a capon in a citrus sauce, a fruit tart, a brew, and a mead. Congratulations to the winners, The Honourable Lord Giovanni Orseolo, Donna Eleanor de Grismonte, Baron Shahid, and Lord Eoin MacAlpen.

Letter to the Barony; Taxes

Unto the knowledgeable populace of Skraeling Althing do Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine send greetings.

Though the snows still rage, the light is returning – hinting at the promise of Spring. It is at this time that We announce Our taxes for the coming year, to be presented to Us at Feast of the Hare in November.

Rather than leave things until the fall, We prefer taxes that can be done throughout the year.

We are, at heart, an educational organization – and one of the most amazing aspects of the SCA is the amount of knowledge that is freely shared. The theme for this year’s taxes is ‘Teaching and Learning’.  We request that all members of Our populace both teach a skill they know, and learn a new one.

We always love hearing about the good things people are doing in this Barony. We would encourage anyone who feels a gentle is deserving of an award, either Kingdom or Baronial, to please write them in. Letter to the Barony; Baronial A&S Championship

Greetings unto the talented populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

We are thrilled to announce that Break the Back of Winter will be hosting Our first Baronial A&S Championship.

Here’s how it works:

  • In order to encourage a breadth of knowledge in Our champion, entrants are required to submit two entries.  These entries are encouraged to be of different arts, and will be scored in respect to breadth.
  • Single entries are welcome, however the entrant would not qualify for the title of champion.
  • It is possible to display your work at A&S and not join in on the discussion/judging process. In this case,  please indicate this and write “DISPLAY ONLY” on a card with your entry.
  • The champion must be a resident of the barony.  Out of barony entrants are welcome to participate and compete for prizes, however the title of champion will go to a member of the barony.
  • In order to find judges knowledgeable in the subject area of the entries, competitors will be required to pre-register their entries.  ‘Display Only’ entries are not required to pre-register, but it would be appreciated to gauge how much space we will need for display.
  • Documentation for entries must be provided to the tourney organizer before the event.  This will give time for the judges to read through the provided documentation.  Deadlines and instructions will be provided in a timely fashion before the event.
  • Each entrant should be prepared to discuss their work and answer questions from the judges.  Following the presentation the entrants will be excused and the panel of judges will score the entries.  The panel will present their scores to the Baron and Baroness, but the final selection of the winner is at the discretion of their Excellencies.
  • Because of the discussion/Q&A portion of the judging, scored entries must be accompanied by their artisan.   ‘Display Only’ entries are allowed in absentia.

Please note: The Kingdom A&S Minister has confirmed that projects entered in a Baronial A&S competition are still eligible to be entered in Kingdom A&S.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email Our Baronial Minister for Arts & Sciences or Ourselves.
